But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
King James Version

Meaning

The apostle John wrote this letter to early Christians being targeted by false teachers who claimed to possess special, secret knowledge about God that ordinary believers lacked. This was an early form of what became known as Gnosticism — a belief system that ranked people spiritually based on insider access. John pushes back directly. The "anointing" he refers to is the Holy Spirit — God's own presence given to every believer at the moment of faith, not reserved for spiritual elites. John's point is bold: you already have direct access to God's truth. This does not make human teachers useless — John is literally teaching them in this very letter — but it means no teacher can replace or override the Spirit's inner witness. The warning is against spiritual manipulation dressed up as enlightenment.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You that You are not reserved for spiritual insiders — You live in me, ordinary as I am. Teach me to recognize Your voice, to trust what is real over what merely sounds impressive, and to stay close to the One who gave You to me. Amen.

Reflection

There is a particular kind of spiritual insecurity that gets exploited. You have been a believer for years, but someone comes along who speaks with unusual authority, drops terms you do not recognize, and suddenly you feel like a beginner in your own faith. A charismatic preacher, a confident podcaster, someone in your small group who seems to have a direct line that you do not. John had watched this play out in real congregations, and his response is not "find a better teacher." It is sharper than that: the anointing you already have is real. Not counterfeit. Not a starter kit waiting to be upgraded by someone with a bigger platform. But this verse is not a permission slip to dismiss learning, accountability, or community. Notice the irony — John is literally teaching them while saying they do not need teachers. The paradox resolves when you see the distinction: there is a difference between someone who helps you hear God better and someone who quietly positions themselves as your only way to hear Him. The first is a genuine gift. The second is a trap. You have a direct line to the source. Trust it — and keep returning to the One who gave it to you.

Discussion Questions

1

What does John mean by "the anointing you received" — who is he referring to, and why does he emphasize that it remains in you rather than fading over time?

2

Have you ever encountered a teacher, leader, or voice that made you feel spiritually dependent on them rather than on God directly — and what did that dynamic feel like from the inside?

3

This verse can be misused to reject accountability, dismiss correction, or avoid community altogether. Where is the line between trusting the Holy Spirit's guidance and using that as an excuse not to be challenged?

4

How would you help someone you care about discern whether a spiritual voice in their life is drawing them closer to God or creating an unhealthy dependence on a human?

5

What is one practical step you could take this week to actively listen for the Holy Spirit's guidance — rather than immediately reaching for someone else's opinion on a decision you are facing?

Translations

As for you, the anointing [the special gift, the preparation] which you received from Him remains [permanently] in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But just as His anointing teaches you [giving you insight through the presence of the Holy Spirit] about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as His anointing has taught you, you must remain in Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him].

AMP

But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie — just as it has taught you, abide in him.

ESV

As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

NASB

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

NIV

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

NKJV

But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true — it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

NLT

But they're no match for what is embedded deeply within you—Christ's anointing, no less! You don't need any of their so-called teaching. Christ's anointing teaches you the truth on everything you need to know about yourself and him, uncontaminated by a single lie. Live deeply in what you were taught.
