For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
Hannah was a woman who desperately wanted a child but couldn't get pregnant. In ancient Israel, being childless carried deep social stigma and was often interpreted as a sign of God's disfavor. Hannah was also taunted relentlessly by her husband's other wife, who did have children. In a moment of raw desperation at the temple, Hannah made a vow: if God gave her a son, she would dedicate him to God's service for his entire life. God answered her prayer, and Samuel was born — a boy who would grow up to be one of Israel's most important prophets and leaders. This verse is Hannah's declaration at the moment she keeps her promise and brings young Samuel to live at the temple.
God, you hear me when I pray — even when I can't feel it. Thank you for the specific moments you've broken through. Help me not forget them, especially when I'm in the middle of a long, silent wait. Teach me to trust you the way Hannah trusted you — holding on even when nothing seemed to be moving. Amen.
There's something about answered prayer that makes you stop and say it out loud. Hannah doesn't just move on to the next chapter of her life — she stands still and names what happened. "I prayed for this child." She could have quietly enjoyed her answered prayer, folded it into the busyness of new motherhood, let the miracle blur into ordinary life. Instead, she says it plain: I asked. He gave. These five words are an act of defiance against every year she felt forgotten, every month she felt invisible to God. How often do you actually pause and name the specific things God has answered? Not a vague sense of gratitude, but sitting down and saying, "I was desperate about this particular thing, and something shifted." Hannah's declaration is also an act of memory — she doesn't want to forget what it felt like to wait, and she doesn't want to forget who came through. The next time you're in the middle of a hard, unanswered prayer at 3 AM, it helps to have a list of the times He showed up before. Start that list.
What do you know about Hannah's backstory — the years of waiting, the taunting, the desperation at the temple — that makes this single sentence feel like such a significant moment?
Can you name a specific prayer that was answered — something you asked for clearly and actually received? What did that do to your faith?
Why do you think we tend to forget answered prayers more quickly than unanswered ones — and what does that pattern reveal about how we relate to God?
Hannah's answered prayer came with a real cost — she gave Samuel back to God's service almost immediately. How does that complicate the idea of simply getting what you prayed for?
What would it look like for you to keep a tangible, written record of answered prayers — and would you be willing to start one this week?
