And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, a major city in ancient Greece, and in this verse he draws together several promises from the Old Testament — passages where God described his relationship with the people of Israel. The title "Lord Almighty" is one of the most powerful names for God in scripture, emphasizing his supreme authority over everything that exists. What makes this verse arresting is the contrast: the most powerful being imaginable is not keeping his distance — he is announcing a family relationship. "I will be a Father to you" echoes deep covenantal promises God made throughout the Hebrew scriptures. Paul now applies those promises to everyone who follows Jesus — sons and daughters, across every background, gender, and history. It is, in the most literal sense, an adoption announcement from the top of the universe.
Father — that word still catches me off guard sometimes. Thank you for choosing it anyway. Where I feel too complicated or too unworthy to be called yours, remind me that you are the one who said it first. Let me live today from that identity — not fear, not performance, just yours. Amen.
The most powerful being in existence could have described his relationship with us in a hundred different ways. Sovereign and subjects. Architect and blueprint. Judge and defendants. But the word he keeps returning to — the one he chose here — is *Father*. That word lands differently depending on your history. For some people it's warm and safe. For others it's hollow, complicated, or painful in ways that are hard to put into words. God seems to know this — which may be exactly why the promise here is spoken so plainly, without conditions, by the One calling himself Almighty. He isn't saying he'll be a father to you once you've sorted out your theology, or once you've worked through your complicated feelings about the word. He's just saying: *I will be.* You will be mine. There's something almost reckless about the generosity of it. You don't need a perfect foundation to receive what's being offered — just enough room to let it in.
What does calling God 'Father' mean to you personally — and are there reasons, whether from your history or your doubts, that make that particular word complicated?
Paul presents this as a promise that is now simply true for you. How does knowing you are a son or daughter of God change — or challenge — how you actually see yourself?
The verse pairs 'Lord Almighty' with 'Father' in the same breath. Why do you think both descriptions matter? What would be missing if God were only all-powerful, or only personal and close?
If you are a child of God, then so is the person who frustrates you most right now. How does that shared identity — children of the same Father — affect how you treat difficult people in your life?
If you genuinely lived this week as a beloved child of the most powerful being in existence — not striving to earn it, just receiving it — what is one specific thing you would do differently?
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
