According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Peter was one of Jesus' twelve closest disciples — a fisherman who became a leader of the early church after Jesus' death and resurrection. He wrote this letter near the end of his own life to encourage Christians who were facing doubt and outside pressure. This verse is his opening assurance: God's power has already given us everything we need — not just to survive, but to genuinely live well and become more like God. The word 'godliness' means a life that reflects God's own character. This provision comes through knowing God personally — not just knowing facts about him, but a living relationship. Importantly, God called us not because of anything impressive in us, but because of his own glory and goodness.
God, I confess I spend a lot of energy searching for what you've already provided. Help me stop striving like something essential is missing and start living from the fullness you've already given. You called me by your own goodness — let that be enough today. Amen.
We are a generation of people who feel perpetually underprepared. One more course, one more book, one more podcast — convinced that the right information will finally make us enough. Peter writes to people who had none of what we have access to, and he says: you already have everything you need. Not 'will have someday.' Not 'will have once you figure it out.' Have. Past tense. Done deal. The 'everything' here isn't a full inbox or a well-worn self-improvement plan. It's a person. Knowing God *is* the resource. Which means the question isn't 'what am I still missing?' but 'how well do I actually know the one who called me?' You don't need more tools. You might just need more of him — not information about him, but real, unhurried time in his presence.
What do you think Peter means by 'everything we need for life and godliness'? What would that practically include on a day-to-day level?
Where in your life do you most feel like you're lacking something essential to be who God wants you to be?
Do you actually believe that knowing God more deeply is sufficient for real life change — or does that feel too simple? What makes it genuinely hard to accept?
How does it affect the way you treat others when you feel spiritually depleted versus when you truly believe you've been given everything you need?
What's one concrete step you could take this week to deepen your relationship with God — not learn more about him, but actually spend unhurried time with him?
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
