And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
The prophet Daniel — a Jewish man living in exile in ancient Babylon — received a series of vivid, sometimes terrifying visions about the future. This verse describes a powerful ruler who would use deception to rise, consider himself above everyone, and destroy many people who felt safe. Most Bible scholars identify this as Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a brutal king who ruled around 175 BC, desecrated the Jewish temple, and massacred thousands. Many also see him as a symbol of a larger pattern of evil in human history. The most important line may be the last: this ruler will be destroyed — not by any human army, but by God himself.
God, there are systems of deception that feel far bigger than anything I can fight. I trust that you see every one of them and that your justice is real — even when it moves on a timeline I can't follow. Keep me honest and brave in the small things. Amen.
There's a pattern in history that's almost eerie once you see it: the most dangerous people are often the ones utterly convinced of their own righteousness. Antiochus didn't see himself as a villain. He thought he was civilizing the world. This verse says he 'considered himself superior' — which is almost always the penultimate move before a catastrophic fall. Deceit flourishes precisely when people feel secure. Evil rarely announces itself with a red flag. It arrives wearing the clothes of progress, efficiency, and strength. But here's what's worth holding onto on the days when it genuinely seems like deception is winning: the last sentence is definitive. Destroyed — not by human power. This isn't a close call where the good guys barely survive. The verse doesn't end with a battle scene or a political uprising. It ends with a quiet certainty. You may not have the power to dismantle every system of deception you live inside. But you can refuse to participate in it — in the small, daily, inglorious ways — and you can trust that the One with actual authority hasn't lost track of what's happening. That matters more than it sounds.
The verse says this ruler caused 'deceit to prosper.' What does it look like in practice when deceit prospers in a culture or institution — what are the early signs you'd watch for?
Where in your own life are you tempted toward a sense of superiority or being above accountability? What does this verse's ending say to that tendency?
The ruler is destroyed 'not by human power.' What does that tell us about how God works — and about the limits of what we can or must fix by ourselves?
How does believing in ultimate divine justice affect how you respond to injustice around you right now — does it give you patience, urgency, passivity, or something more complicated?
What is one small act of honesty or integrity you can commit to this week that pushes back, in whatever modest way, against a culture of deceit?
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
