For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
King James Version

Meaning

This verse comes from one of the most dramatic nights in the entire Bible. The Israelite people had been enslaved in Egypt for generations, and God was sending ten devastating plagues to compel Egypt's ruler, Pharaoh, to release them. The tenth and final plague was the death of every firstborn in Egypt. To protect the Israelites, God gave them specific instructions: slaughter a lamb and paint its blood on the top and sides of their doorframes. When God passed through Egypt that night, he would see the blood and 'pass over' those homes — sparing everyone inside from the destroyer. This night, called the Passover, became the most sacred event in Jewish history and is still celebrated annually. For Christians, the image of a sacrificed lamb whose blood provides protection has long been understood as pointing forward to Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, I don't always understand what you're doing or why. But you asked for trust, not comprehension. Help me act on what you've said even when the night feels uncertain and the instructions feel strange. Cover what I cannot protect. Amen.

Reflection

Imagine being a parent that night — brush in hand, painting lamb's blood on the doorframe while your children slept a few feet away. It must have felt surreal. Desperate. You couldn't see what was moving through the darkness outside. You only had a promise and a set of instructions that, on their face, made no rational sense. But the protection didn't come from understanding the plan. It came from trusting it enough to act. Something about this image refuses to let go of me: the blood wasn't applied to the inside of the house where it would be safe and private. It was on the outside, visible to whatever passed through. Obedience here was public and costly — something had to die for the door to be marked. God didn't ask the Israelites to feel safe that night. He asked them to mark their doors and trust the darkness to him. What is outside your control tonight — the diagnosis, the relationship, the future you cannot engineer your way into? Sometimes faith looks less like certainty and more like a brush in your hand, marking what you can and leaving the rest to God.

Discussion Questions

1

The Israelites followed the Passover instructions without fully understanding the theology behind them — what does that suggest about the relationship between obedience and understanding in faith?

2

Is there something in your life right now where you're waiting to understand God's plan before you'll trust him with it? What would it look like to act before you fully understand?

3

The sacrificed lamb is a difficult image — an innocent animal dies so the family is protected. What does this picture stir in you, especially in light of what Christians believe about Jesus?

4

The blood had to be visible on the outside of the door. How does public, visible faith cost you something — and is that cost one you're willing to pay?

5

What is one thing you are afraid of that you could symbolically 'mark the door' about this week — surrendering it to God rather than trying to control it yourself?
