Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Ezekiel was a prophet in the 6th century BC, speaking to the people of Israel during their exile in Babylon — they had been torn from their homeland and were wondering whether God had completely given up on them. God gave Ezekiel the role of a 'watchman,' someone responsible for warning the community of approaching danger. In this verse, God makes one of the most striking statements about his own character in the entire Bible: he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. The word 'wicked' refers to people living in ways that are deeply destructive and rebellious. What God wants is not punishment — it's for people to turn around and live. The repeated command 'Turn! Turn!' carries an almost desperate urgency, like someone shouting to a person walking toward the edge of a cliff.
Lord, I hear you — you take no pleasure in watching me stay lost. Help me actually believe that's true, especially on the days when I feel too far gone to turn back. Today, I choose to turn toward you. Amen.
Read that line one more time, slowly: *I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked.* If you grew up with a picture of God as someone who tallies your failures and eventually runs out of patience — someone holding a gavel, waiting — this verse is a direct and deliberate contradiction. God here is not holding a gavel. He is calling out across the distance. There's a rawness in the doubled command — "Turn! Turn!" — that sounds less like a royal decree and more like someone shouting your name across a busy street. This is not the voice of someone who has already written people off. It is unmistakably the voice of someone who hasn't. Maybe you've written someone off — decided they're too far gone, too settled in their ways, too lost to come back. Or maybe, quietly, you suspect God has written *you* off — that the gap between where you are and where you think you should be is simply too wide to close. This verse is God's answer to both. The invitation here isn't complicated: *turn*. Not fix everything first. Not arrive already cleaned up. Not understand it all before you move. Just turn — change direction, face toward him, take one step. That's all the verse asks. And the one asking swore on his own life that he wants you to live.
God declares 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked' — what does that statement tell you about what God actually *wants* from people who have wandered far from him?
Is there someone in your life you've mentally written off as too far gone to change? How does this verse speak directly into that assumption?
The urgency of 'Turn! Turn!' is striking — God repeats it. Why do you think he does that? What does the repetition reveal about the situation, and about the kind of God who is speaking?
This verse was spoken to people in exile who felt like God was completely done with them. How do guilt and shame make it harder to actually believe that God genuinely wants us to come back to him?
What would 'turning' look like in your life right now — not a complete overhaul, but one first step in a different direction? What is the single thing standing between you and taking it?
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
