And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
This is God's first promise after humanity's catastrophic failure in Eden. Speaking to the serpent (Satan), God declares that from Eve's descendants will come someone who will ultimately defeat evil, though not without injury. This "offspring" points forward to Jesus, who would deal the death blow to sin and Satan while being wounded Himself. It's the first hint that God already had a rescue plan before Adam and Eve even left the garden.
Crushing Savior, thank You for not leaving us to the serpent's lies. When I feel the old wounds, remind me of the new story You've written in blood. Help me live like the one who crushed the serpent's head is still crushing every lie that tries to claim me. Amen.
Before Adam's tears hit the ground, before shame sewed fig leaves, before the garden gates slammed shut — God was already writing redemption's story. While we were still choosing death, He was choosing our resurrection. This verse isn't just ancient prophecy; it's the first heartbeat of hope in a world suddenly gone dark. Your worst moment isn't the end of your story. The same God who wouldn't let sin have the final word in Eden won't let it have the final word in your life. Whatever serpent lies you're wrestling with — addiction, depression, betrayal — the cross stands as proof that the crusher has come. The wound in His heel became the wound that heals yours.
What strikes you about God making this promise immediately after the first human sin?
How have you experienced "serpent strikes" in your own life, and where do you need to remember the "crusher" has come?
Why do you think God chose to work through human offspring to defeat evil?
How might believing that God was already planning your redemption change how you view your past?
Who needs to hear that their story isn't over, and how could you share this hope with them this week?
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel .
