For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
The book of Hebrews was written to early Christians — many of them Jewish believers — who were under intense pressure to abandon their faith and return to their previous religious practices. The author is urging them to hold on. This verse says that our genuine participation in Christ is real and lasting, but it is demonstrated through perseverance. The "confidence we had at first" refers to the bold, assured trust that marked the beginning of faith. The verse isn't saying you earn your place with God by holding on, but that the holding on is evidence that the connection is real.
Father, I confess that the early fire doesn't always burn as bright as it once did. But you haven't changed — you are still who you were when I first believed. Help me hold firmly not through willpower alone, but through a fresh sight of who Christ is. Steady me. Amen.
There's a particular kind of faith that burns hot at the start — you probably remember it. The clarity of a first prayer, the way everything felt charged with meaning, the strange courage that came from feeling like you'd found something real. Hebrews was written to people who'd had exactly that, and then watched it cool. Not because of scandal or dramatic doubt, but because time passed, hardship pressed in, and the cost of following Jesus became clearer and less romantic. The author's word for them — and for anyone reading — is not "try harder." It's closer to "remember what you know." The conditional in this verse is worth sitting with: "if we hold firmly." It doesn't threaten your salvation, but it does ask a real question about what your faith looks like right now — not the day you first believed, but today. This ordinary day. The confidence you had at first wasn't just emotion; it was a settled conviction that Christ is who he says he is. That conviction doesn't need to stay fresh and warm to remain true. You don't have to feel it to hold it. But you do have to hold it.
What does "the confidence we had at first" look like in your own faith story — what was it based on, and how does it feel different from where you are now?
In what areas of your life has your confidence in Christ grown quieter or cooler over time? What do you think happened?
Some people argue that genuine faith can never truly be lost, while others say this verse suggests it can fade away. What do you think the author of Hebrews is actually warning against?
How does the perseverance — or wavering — of the people around you affect your own ability to hold firmly to faith?
What is one concrete thing you could do this week to re-anchor yourself in the confidence you first had in Christ?
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
