Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
King James Version

Meaning

This verse comes from the book of Isaiah, written to the people of Israel during a time of national crisis and the looming threat of exile by a foreign empire. God is making a declaration about his uniqueness — he alone is God; there was no god before him and there will be none after. He calls Israel his "witnesses" — people who can testify from firsthand experience that he is real, faithful, and unlike any false god. The word "servant" here refers to Israel as a people chosen for a specific purpose: to demonstrate God's reality to the surrounding nations through what they have lived and seen. This is not abstract theology — it is a personal commissioning.

Prayer

Lord, you've called me as a witness — not because I have everything together, but because I've seen you work. Help me remember what you've done in my life and find the courage to say it out loud to someone who needs to hear it. My story is yours. Use it. Amen.

Reflection

A courtroom witness doesn't speak from theory — they speak from what they've seen, heard, touched. God isn't asking Israel to win a philosophical debate about the existence of god. He's asking them to testify. "You've seen what I've done. You know what I am. Tell them." It's an extraordinary thing — the God who needs nothing from anyone, choosing to make his case to the world through the stories of ordinary people who've walked with him through wilderness and famine and rescue. Your life is evidence. Not polished evidence — more like a rough-cut documentary than a produced film. But when you speak honestly about the moment you almost didn't make it through, and somehow did — that's testimony. When you describe praying at the end of your rope and something shifted — that's witness. God isn't waiting for you to have everything figured out before he sends you. He's asking you to remember, and to tell the truth about what you've seen. What is the story only you can tell?
