Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
This verse comes from the book of Isaiah, where a prophet named Isaiah spoke messages from God to the people of ancient Israel during a time of great unfaithfulness and spiritual wandering. God is making the case for his own consistency: he has always spoken openly, never in secret, and whenever he announced something in advance, he was present when it came to pass. Then the voice in the verse shifts unexpectedly — someone says "the Sovereign Lord has sent me, with his Spirit," which sounds less like the prophet and more like a distinct figure being sent by God. Many Bible scholars and Christian readers across history have understood this as an early glimpse of Jesus — the one sent by the Father, filled with the Spirit — embedded in a text written centuries before his birth.
God, thank you for not hiding. You have spoken clearly, shown up consistently, and sent your Spirit into the world. When I feel like you are distant or silent, remind me of this — that you are there, right in the middle of what is happening. Help me trust what I cannot always see. Amen.
"At the time it happens, I am there." Not "I was there." Not "I will be there." Present tense, every time. God is making a claim in this verse that spans centuries — that every promise he ever announced, he showed up for the fulfillment personally. He doesn't send words into the world and watch from a distance to see how things turn out. He is there, at the moment of arrival. And then, just as you're settling into that thought, the voice in the verse shifts — "the Sovereign Lord has sent me, with his Spirit" — and suddenly it doesn't sound like Isaiah anymore. It sounds like a promise folded inside a promise. This verse asks something quiet of you: do you actually believe God has been transparent with you? Not withholding, not hidden, not playing some cosmic long game he hasn't let you in on. Many of us carry a low-grade suspicion that God is holding something back — that clarity and presence are for other people, that the silence in our own lives means absence. But here is a God who says plainly, "I have not spoken in secret." The same God who showed up at the moment of every fulfillment he ever announced is the God you're praying to today. What might change in you if you actually took that at face value?
What does it mean for God to say he has "not spoken in secret"? How does that contrast with how you sometimes picture God — as mysterious, distant, or hard to read?
Have you ever had a moment where you could look back and clearly say "God was there"? What helped you recognize it — and did you see it at the time, or only in hindsight?
The voice at the end of the verse seems to shift to someone saying they were sent by the Sovereign Lord with his Spirit. Why might that detail be significant, and how does it change the weight of what's being said?
How does the idea of a God who is present "at the time it happens" affect how you think about what you're walking through right now, today?
If you genuinely believed God was not withholding anything from you — that he had been transparent all along — what fear or doubt would you be willing to release this week?
