But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
Jeremiah was a prophet in ancient Judah around 600 BC who spent decades delivering messages from God that nobody wanted to hear — warnings of judgment, coming exile, and the destruction of Jerusalem. As a result, he was publicly mocked, physically beaten, put in wooden stocks, and repeatedly threatened with death. Jeremiah 20 is one of his most raw and unfiltered writings — he pours out bitter anguish, even cursing the day he was born. But right in the middle of that lament, this declaration breaks through like light under a door: God is with him like a mighty warrior, and his enemies will not ultimately prevail. It is a burst of hard-won faith right in the middle of collapse.
Lord, I am tired of fighting battles that feel bigger than me. Be the warrior I need You to be. Help me trust that Your presence changes the outcome, even when my circumstances haven't shifted yet, even when I'm still surrounded. I choose to stand today. Amen.
This is what faith looks like when it has stopped performing. Jeremiah isn't writing from a mountaintop. He's exhausted, publicly humiliated, and surrounded by people who want him silenced. And yet — 'the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior.' Not a polite helper. Not a distant observer. A warrior. There's something important in that word. Jeremiah isn't saying God will make everything comfortable. He's saying God is a fighter on his behalf, and that changes the final outcome even when it doesn't change the circumstances right now. There may be a stretch in your life where you've been faithful, you've been honest, you've done the hard right thing — and it's cost you. People have turned on you. The opposition is loud. This verse doesn't promise you a smooth road. It promises you are not outnumbered.
Jeremiah is brutally honest about his suffering — even cursing the day he was born — before declaring his trust in God. What does that tell you about what honest prayer is allowed to look like?
Have you ever been in a stretch where you felt surrounded by opposition or misunderstood for doing what you believed was right? What did that cost you, and what kept you going?
Jeremiah describes God as a 'mighty warrior' standing with him. Does that image of God feel real and accessible to you, or distant? What shapes your answer?
How does believing that God is fighting for you change how you treat the people who oppose or hurt you — does it make it easier or harder to resist the pull toward retaliation?
Is there a situation in your life right now where you need to declare — even out loud, even if your voice shakes — 'the Lord is with me'? What would it take to say that today?
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
2 Timothy 4:17
To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
