In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
The Gospel of John opens not with a birth story but with a sweeping poem about who Jesus is at the deepest level. John calls Jesus 'the Word' — God's ultimate self-expression — and describes him as existing before creation itself. This verse declares that Jesus is not merely alive; he is the source of all life. The phrase 'that life was the light of men' takes it further: the life carried in Jesus doesn't just sustain us — it illuminates us, helping humanity see reality clearly. Written in a world full of competing philosophies and gods, John's claim was radical: the origin of all life and all truth is not an idea or a force, but a person.
Lord, some days I forget that you are not just a guide but the source itself — the life behind my life, the light that existed before I could even see. Teach me to stop running from one dim candle to the next and to return to you, from whom all light begins. Amen.
There's a difference between a candle and the sun. A candle can be snuffed out, carried around, handed off. The sun is the source — everything that lights up does so because of it. John isn't saying Jesus carries light like someone holding a torch through the dark. He's saying the life that beats in every human heart, the fact that anything exists at all rather than nothing, finds its origin in him. That's a staggering thought for a Tuesday morning. Here's what this means for you: you weren't brought into existence by something cold and impersonal. The source of your life has a face. When you feel like you're running on empty — when it's 3 AM and you can't sleep and the weight of everything feels crushing — this verse is not a lecture. It's an invitation to return to the source. Light doesn't manufacture itself. It stays near what's already burning.
What do you think John means by describing Jesus as both 'life' and 'light'? How are those two ideas connected?
When has someone or something felt like a genuine source of light in your life — not just comfort, but actual clarity about who you are or what's true?
If Jesus is the source of all life, what does that mean for people who have never heard of him? How do you honestly wrestle with that question?
How might recognizing Jesus as the origin of life — not just a good teacher — change the way you treat people around you who seem to be living in darkness?
What is one area of your life right now — a fear, a habit, a part of yourself you keep hidden — that you could intentionally bring into the light this week?
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
