John 1:42

This verse takes place at the very beginning of Jesus' public ministry. A man named Andrew had just become one of Jesus' first followers, and the first thing he did was find his brother Simon and bring him to meet Jesus. The moment Jesus saw Simon, he did something unexpected: he gave him a new name. "Cephas" is the Aramaic word for "rock," and "Peter" is its Greek equivalent. Simon was an ordinary fisherman with no particular religious reputation at this point — and yet Jesus looked at him and declared, not who he currently was, but who he was going to become.

Jesus, you looked at an ordinary fisherman and saw a rock. Look at me too — not at the failures and the fear, but at who you're making me. Speak your name for me louder than everything else, and give me the courage to start living into it. Amen.

Jesus doesn't ask for a resume. He doesn't run through Simon's history or wait to see how he performs under pressure. He looks at him once and names the future into the present. That word "will" is doing extraordinary work here — because anyone who reads the rest of Simon Peter's story knows he was impulsive, prone to saying the wrong thing at the worst moment, and ultimately the man who denied even knowing Jesus three times, out loud, around a fire, on the worst night of Jesus' life. Jesus named him "Rock" before any of that. Before the failure, and before the redemption. There is something quietly devastating about being truly seen by someone — not as your worst moment or your current unraveling, but as the person you are being shaped into. You may not feel like rock material today. You might feel more like sand — unstable, easily shifted, moved by whatever pressure finds you. But Jesus has a long history of looking at ordinary, complicated people and naming something in them they cannot yet see in themselves. What name do you think he might be speaking over you? It could be the exact opposite of what you've been calling yourself lately.
