Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
King James Version

Meaning

Jesus is talking about his own coming death and resurrection, using farming language his listeners knew well. A single wheat kernel looks insignificant, but when it's buried in soil, it breaks apart and becomes the source of a whole harvest. This death isn't the end — it's the only way new life can burst forth. Jesus is preparing his friends for the shock of Good Friday by revealing how apparent defeat becomes multiplied victory.

Prayer

God of buried seeds and surprising harvests, I bring you the parts of my life that feel like death sentences. Help me trust that what you've allowed to fall might actually rise — not because I understand, but because I know you. Grow what I cannot see. Amen.

Reflection

I watched my grandmother plant tulip bulbs one October afternoon, tucking each brown lump into the soil like a small funeral. 'These look dead,' I told her. She smiled. 'They're about to come alive in a way you can't imagine.' Six months later, a riot of red and yellow danced where death had been buried. Your hardest losses — the job you didn't get, the relationship that ended, the dream that died — might be kernels falling into ground you can't yet see. Jesus isn't offering cheap comfort here; he's naming real death, real burial. But he's also saying that buried things don't stay buried forever in God's economy. What looks like the end of your story might be the underground beginning of something you can't yet imagine. The question isn't whether you'll face burial seasons. The question is whether you'll trust what God might grow from the wreckage.
