His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
This verse takes place at a wedding celebration in Cana, a small town in Galilee, during what is believed to be the very beginning of Jesus's public ministry. Weddings in first-century Jewish culture were multi-day celebrations, and running out of wine would have been a serious and humiliating social failure for the host family. Mary, Jesus's mother, notices the problem and brings it to Jesus. When he responds in a way that seems like hesitation, Mary doesn't argue or press him further — she simply turns to the servants waiting nearby and says these words: 'Do whatever he tells you.' She doesn't know what he's going to do. She has no plan. She just points. What follows is Jesus's first recorded miracle: turning large stone jars of water into wine.
Jesus, I want to be someone who hears your voice and actually moves. Forgive me for the times I've heard and waited, sensed and stalled. Today I choose to do whatever you tell me. Speak clearly, and give me the courage to follow without needing to see the whole picture first. Amen.
She doesn't know what he's going to do. There's no plan, no script, no guarantee that anything is about to happen. And yet Mary doesn't explain herself to the servants, doesn't manage the situation, doesn't go back to Jesus with a suggestion. She just turns and says five words: 'Do whatever he tells you.' There's something quietly radical in that posture. It's not passive — it takes real trust to hand a problem over that cleanly. But it's also not controlling. She knows she doesn't need to figure it out. She just needs to point. What would it look like for you to live by that same instruction? Not just in the big, dramatic turning points of life, but in the ordinary Tuesday obediences — the nudge you talked yourself out of, the apology that's been sitting in your chest for three weeks, the call you keep meaning to make. 'Do whatever he tells you' is only possible if you're actually listening. And it only means something if you actually move. Mary doesn't get to see the miracle until the servants obey. What has he told you lately that you haven't done yet?
Mary gives this instruction before she knows what Jesus will do — before there is any evidence that a miracle is coming. What does that tell you about the nature of her trust in him?
Is there something you believe God has been asking you to do that you've been hesitating on — and if so, what is the hesitation actually about?
Is obedience the same as faith, or are they different things? How do you think about the relationship between believing something and actually doing it?
How does Mary's example here — quietly pointing others to Jesus rather than arguing or explaining — shape the way you think about your own influence on the people around you?
What is one specific thing you sense God has been telling you to do that you could take a first, concrete step toward this week?
