After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
This verse opens the final chapter of John's Gospel. Jesus has already risen from the dead and appeared to his disciples — and yet here they are, back in Galilee at the Sea of Tiberias, the lake where several of them had been fishermen before Jesus called them to follow him. 'It happened this way' signals that John wants readers to pay careful attention to what follows. The disciples have returned to familiar ground — their old jobs, their old lake — and Jesus meets them right there, in the middle of the retreat to what they knew.
Jesus, you appeared again and again — not when they had it figured out, but when they were confused and reverting. Meet me in my ordinary places too. I am not always where I want to be, but I am looking for you on the shore. Amen.
They went fishing. After three years of miracles, after the Last Supper, after an empty tomb — Peter and the others went back to their boats. It's hard to blame them. When life becomes incomprehensible, we return to what we know. You scroll the same feeds. You drive past the old house. You pick up the habit you quit or the job you left or the version of yourself you thought you were done with. Familiar ground feels like solid ground when everything else has been shaken. And Jesus showed up there. Not in a temple, not at a podium — at the water's edge, in the gray morning, while they were hauling empty nets. He didn't wait for them to have it together. John says he 'appeared again' — that word, *again*, carrying more grace than it seems. Where in your ordinary retreat to the familiar might Jesus already be standing, waiting at the shore? You might not recognize him at first. But he's there.
John sets this scene with the phrase 'it happened this way' — signaling that the details matter. What does it mean to you that Jesus chose to appear at a lake, in a work context, rather than somewhere overtly sacred?
Have you ever returned to something familiar — an old habit, an old place, an old way of being — after a disorienting life event? What drove you back there?
The text says Jesus 'appeared again' to his disciples — this was not the first post-resurrection appearance. What does the repetition of his presence suggest about what God is like when we are slow to recognize him?
If Jesus walked up to you in the most ordinary part of your current week — your commute, your kitchen, your desk — what do you think he would say to you right now?
Is there a place in your life where you have quietly retreated into 'old fishing' mode — defaulting to the familiar because something new feels too uncertain or too costly? What would it take to look up toward the shore?
Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
