John 6:68

This moment comes right after one of Jesus's most difficult teachings. He had told a large crowd that he was the "bread of life" — that people needed to spiritually receive him to have eternal life. The language was strange and hard to hear, and many people who had been following Jesus simply turned around and walked away. Jesus then looked at his twelve closest disciples and asked if they wanted to leave as well. Peter — one of the twelve, known for speaking passionately and first — answers for the group. He does not say they have figured everything out. He says, essentially: we have looked around, and there is nowhere better to go. You are the only one with words that actually lead to life.

Jesus, some of your words are hard. Sometimes I do not fully understand, and sometimes I want to walk away. But I have looked around — and I keep coming back to you. There is nowhere else that offers what you offer. Hold me here when I want to leave. Amen.

Notice what Peter does not say. He does not say "we understand you" or "we have no more confusion." He essentially says: we have looked at the alternatives, and nothing comes close. That is a startling kind of faith — not built on clarity, but on clear-eyed comparison. Peter has watched the religious leaders. He has seen what money and power do to people. He has heard other voices promising life. And after all that, he comes back to Jesus — not with triumphant certainty, but with honest conviction: there is simply nowhere else. There are moments — maybe three-in-the-morning moments, maybe long-drive-alone moments — when faith feels more like Peter's answer than a confident declaration. When you cannot explain everything, when the hard teaching does not fully land, when you are not sure what you believe anymore. But you look around and still cannot find anything that comes close. That is not weak faith. That is honest faith. Where do you go when things get confusing? And is there still something in you that looks at Jesus and says — with all your uncertainty intact — where else would I even go?
