Luke 10:12

Jesus has just sent out 72 of his followers in pairs to various towns to announce God's kingdom and to heal the sick. He warned them that some towns would reject both them and their message. Sodom was an ancient city famously destroyed by God because of its deep moral corruption — its story is recorded in Genesis 19. Jesus makes a startling comparison: towns that witnessed his miracles and heard his teaching firsthand, yet still turned away, would face a more severe judgment than even Sodom. The reason is sobering — they had far greater opportunity to respond, and they still chose to walk away.

Lord, I don't want to be a town that walked away. Thank you for every moment of grace you have placed in my path — the people, the nudges, the convictions I couldn't quite explain. Help me not to waste them. Soften my heart not just to hear, but to actually respond. Amen.

We tend to reserve our worst moral condemnation for Sodom — it has become cultural shorthand for extreme depravity. So when Jesus says certain towns will have it worse on judgment day, it hits like cold water. What made those towns' rejection so serious was not their lifestyle. It was their opportunity. They had watched Jesus heal. They had heard him teach in the streets. They had every reason to respond — and they shrugged. Indifference in the face of grace may be the most dangerous spiritual posture of all. This verse is worth sitting with honestly, because it speaks to more than ancient villages. Every time the gospel is made clear to you — every quiet conviction, every unexpected invitation, every moment where something in you said this matters — and you walk away unchanged, you are those towns. The question isn't whether you've heard. It's what you've done with what you've heard. The greater the light, the heavier the responsibility it places on us. That's not meant to terrify — it's meant to wake something up.
