Luke 17:15

This verse is part of a story in which Jesus healed ten men suffering from leprosy — a skin disease that in ancient times caused people to be completely cut off from their families and communities. According to Jewish law, people with leprosy had to live separately from everyone else and were forbidden from normal social life. Jesus told all ten to go present themselves to the priests, which was the official process for being declared healthy and restored to society. As they walked, they were healed. But of the ten, only one stopped what he was doing, turned around, and ran back to Jesus — shouting praise to God as he came.

God, I confess I've walked away from more healings than I can count — too relieved to be grateful. Teach me to be the one who turns back, who stops, who names what you've done out loud. You deserve more than my silent assumption that things just worked out. Amen.

Think about what this man had waiting for him. His family. His home. His old life — possibly years of exile suddenly handed back. He had every reason to keep walking. And nine of them did. But something stopped him mid-step: the awareness that something profound had happened and that he had to say so. Gratitude, real gratitude, is almost physically disruptive. It makes you stop. Turn around. Make noise. When did you last let gratitude actually interrupt you? Not a polite "thank you, God" tacked onto the end of a prayer, but the kind that made you stop what you were doing, turn around in your spirit, and just say it out loud? The healed man didn't calculate whether it was appropriate. He came back praising in a loud voice. You have things you've been given that you're still just walking away from. Today might be the day to turn around.
