No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
Jesus frequently taught through parables — short, vivid comparisons drawn from everyday life that carried deeper spiritual meaning. Here he uses the image of a lamp, which in first-century homes was a small clay vessel filled with olive oil with a wick that provided light in an otherwise dark room. Jesus points out the obvious absurdity of lighting a lamp and then hiding it — covering it with a clay jar or tucking it under a bed. The whole point of a lamp is to be placed where it can illuminate a space for everyone who enters. Jesus is drawing a parallel to his followers: they have received something real — truth, faith, the presence of God — and that was never meant to be kept private. It was given so that it could make things visible for others.
God, show me what I've been placing over the light you've put in me. I don't want to perform faith — but I don't want to hide it either. Help me be simply and honestly present to the people around me, in a way that helps them see. Amen.
Here's what gets overlooked: a lamp doesn't dim by accident. To put it under a bed or inside a jar, you have to actively cover it. Which means that when faith goes quiet in someone's life — when it stops being visible to the people around them — it's rarely because it simply faded on its own. Something got placed over it. Fear of being judged. The slow, exhausting desire to fit in. The worry that your faith will make things weird at the table, at the office, in the group chat. The lamp doesn't go out. It gets covered. Jesus isn't standing over you with a checklist. He's asking a clarifying question about what light is actually for. A lamp on a stand doesn't announce itself — it just does what it was made to do, and people can see because of it. You don't have to perform your faith or make it a defining personality trait. But it might be worth asking yourself honestly: what have I placed over mine? And is there something small — not dramatic, just honest — that I could move so the light can do what it was always meant to do?
