Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
King James Version

Meaning

This exchange happens when a desperate father brings his son to Jesus for healing — the boy had been tormented since childhood by a spirit that threw him into fire and water, and Jesus's disciples had already tried and failed to help. The father approaches Jesus with a tentative, anguished plea: "if you can do anything, please help us." Jesus immediately catches that phrase — "if you can?" — and turns it back, challenging the very idea that his ability was in question. The word translated as "believes" does not mean agreeing to theological facts; it means active, relational trust in who Jesus is. The father's raw response — "I believe; help me with my unbelief!" — shows that Jesus is inviting him into deeper trust, not demanding a polished faith performance before he acts.

Prayer

Jesus, I come to you today with my own "if you can" — the hope I have been too afraid to name out loud. I believe. Help me with my unbelief. I trust that you are not put off by my doubt. Amen.

Reflection

The father's "if you can" is one of the most honest things anyone ever said to Jesus. It is the prayer of a man who has lived inside an impossible situation long enough that hope has become dangerous — he cannot afford to want too much. And Jesus does not rebuke him for the doubt tucked inside that question. He catches it, names it, holds it up, and reframes the entire situation. The question was never whether Jesus could. The father just needed someone to tell him that plainly. Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not demand a clean, complete faith before he acts. He does not require the father to resolve his doubt first. The man says "I believe; help me with my unbelief" — one of the most honest prayers in all of Scripture — and Jesus heals his son anyway. Your faith does not have to be polished to be real. What "if you can" are you sitting with today — the thing you have quietly stopped praying because the door has been shut long enough that hoping feels foolish? Bring it back. Even if your prayer sounds more like that father's than you would like.

Discussion Questions

1

Why do you think Jesus responds to the father's "if you can" with a question rather than immediate reassurance? What is he drawing out of the man in that moment?

2

What prayers have you quietly given up on — things you have stopped bringing to God because hoping felt too costly after too many closed doors?

3

The father admits his unbelief in the same breath as his belief, and Jesus responds anyway. What does this tell you about what faith actually requires — and what it does not?

4

Is there someone in your life who is at their own "if you can" moment right now? How might you sit with them honestly in it, rather than reaching for easy answers?

5

Write a short, honest prayer this week that begins with "if you can" and names the specific thing you have been afraid to ask. What does it feel like to bring that to God without pretending to more faith than you actually have?
