But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
Jesus is speaking to his twelve disciples as he sends them out on a mission — and he warns them that this work will come with real danger, including being dragged before governors and authorities. This verse is his reassurance in the middle of that warning: don't spend your energy preparing a speech. When the moment of confrontation arrives, the Holy Spirit will supply what you need to say. This wasn't a promise about ordinary public speaking anxiety; it was a specific word for people facing genuine threat and legal jeopardy. The point is not carelessness but trust — God won't leave you speechless in the moment he allowed.
God, I confess I spend a lot of energy rehearsing things I'm afraid of. Teach me what it means to trust you in those moments instead of my own scripts. Give me the courage to show up, and give me the words I need when I get there. Amen.
There's a particular kind of dread that comes with knowing a hard conversation is coming. Maybe it's a confrontation you've been avoiding, or a question someone will ask that you don't know how to answer, or a moment when your faith will be on trial in a way you haven't prepared for. We tend to rehearse. We script. We lie awake at 2 AM running the lines. But Jesus says something that should stop our frantic mental rehearsal cold: stop preparing, because I'll be there. That's not a license for laziness or spiritual carelessness — it's an invitation to trust that God shows up in the exact moment you need him. The disciples he was speaking to would eventually stand before Roman governors and Jewish councils. They weren't prepared professionals. They were fishermen. And yet the words came. Maybe the next time you're dreading a hard conversation, the real preparation isn't scripting — it's prayer, and then showing up.
What do you think Jesus means by 'you will be given what to say' — is this about miraculous intervention, or something more ordinary happening through trust?
Think about a time you had to speak up in a genuinely difficult situation. Did you feel supported or alone in that moment, and what made the difference?
Does this verse give permission to avoid preparation altogether, or is there a real tension between trusting God and doing the work of being ready?
How might it change the way you show up for others if you genuinely believed God could speak through you in the hard moments you face together?
Is there a conversation or situation you've been avoiding because you don't know what to say? What would it look like to take one step toward it this week?
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
