But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
King James Version

Meaning

Jesus delivers this fierce warning after his disciples try to stop children from approaching him. The 'little ones' aren't just kids — they represent anyone vulnerable in faith, especially new believers or those easily influenced. Millstones were massive stones used to grind grain, heavy enough that drowning with one ensured death. This graphic image shows Jesus' absolute fury toward those who exploit or mislead vulnerable believers.

Prayer

Fierce protector Jesus, forgive me for the times I've been too busy, too important, or too cynical to protect the vulnerable in faith. Make me someone who opens doors, never slams them. Help me see who needs my protection today. Amen.

Reflection

I once watched a youth pastor laugh as he told a story about how he 'toughened up' a sensitive teenager by mocking his questions about hell. The adults chuckled. The teen never came back. I've wondered since what millstone Jesus might have tied to that pastor's words. This isn't gentle Jesus meek and mild. This is Jesus protecting the protected — the kids who trust adults, the new believers who don't know better, the vulnerable who assume spiritual leaders have integrity. The verse asks brutal questions of anyone in influence: Are your words, your example, your silence creating safe space for faith to grow? Or are you — through sarcasm, power plays, manipulation, or simply neglect — building barriers between people and God? The kids are watching. The new believers are listening. And Jesus is taking names.
