He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
A wealthy young man came to Jesus asking what he needed to do to receive eternal life. When Jesus told him to keep the commandments, the man pushed back — "which ones?" Jesus responded by listing several from the Ten Commandments: no murder, no adultery, no stealing, no lying under oath. These laws, given to Moses centuries earlier, were the moral backbone of Jewish life. But this moment is just the opening act — Jesus was about to reveal that the man's real obstacle wasn't any of these sins, but his grip on his wealth.
Lord, I come to you like this man — often looking for the right list, the manageable box I can check. Help me stop asking 'which ones?' and start asking 'what's in my way?' Show me what I'm clutching too tightly, and give me the courage to open my hands. Amen.
There's something almost comic about asking "which commandments?" — as if Jesus might list only the easy ones and the man could check a few boxes and be done. But the question reveals more than he probably intended. He wasn't being lazy; he likely believed he had kept these laws. He was scanning for the one rule he hadn't yet broken, hoping the list was something he could manage. We do this too — running quiet audits of our lives, relieved when we find nothing too incriminating. What's striking is what Jesus didn't do yet. He didn't argue or roll his eyes. He gave the man exactly what he asked for — and then added one more thing that exposed everything. The real question was never about which rules. It was about what this man held onto more tightly than God. Before you ask "which ones?" it's worth sitting with a harder question: what's the thing in your life that you're quietly hoping Jesus won't mention?
Why do you think the man asked 'which ones?' — what does that question reveal about how he understood the path to eternal life?
Is there a commandment in Jesus's list that feels more personally challenging to you than the others, and why?
The man believed he had kept all these laws — and he may have been right on the surface. What's the difference between following a rule and genuinely living by what it represents?
These specific commands — about honesty, faithfulness, and not harming others — shape the texture of daily relationships. Which one most directly challenges the way you currently treat the people around you?
If Jesus looked at your life today and named the one thing you're still holding back, what do you think it would be — and what is one small step you could take toward loosening your grip on it?
