For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Jesus is speaking to his disciples about future events, including his return to earth — a moment often called the Second Coming. The title "Son of Man" is one Jesus used for himself, drawn from the Old Testament book of Daniel, where it describes a heavenly figure who comes in glory. In this chapter, Jesus is correcting a dangerous misconception: some people would claim the Messiah had already returned, quietly and in secret — hidden away in the wilderness or behind closed doors. Jesus shuts that down hard. His return, he says, will be nothing like a rumor. It will be like lightning splitting the sky from one horizon to the other — instantaneous, total, and impossible to miss.
God, forgive me for shrinking you down to something I can manage. You are not quiet or hidden — you are the light that splits the entire sky. Help me stop settling for counterfeits, and keep my eyes open to what is unmistakably real and true. Amen.
There is something about lightning that stops you mid-sentence. You can't negotiate with it, schedule it, or mistake it for something else. One second the sky is dark, and the next, the world is lit white from edge to edge. Jesus chose that image deliberately, and it's worth sitting with. He's speaking to people who are desperate, fearful, looking for signs — the exact emotional state that makes a person vulnerable to counterfeits. And there will always be someone willing to say, "He's out there, in the desert. He's in that back room. Follow me." Desperation narrows your vision. Jesus was trying to widen it back out. What "quiet" versions of faith have you been settling for — a spirituality that stays in the background, asks little, and mostly fits around your existing life without disrupting it? This verse isn't a rebuke; it's a recalibration. The real thing, Jesus says, cannot be confused with a counterfeit — not because it's louder, but because it's total. If your faith has been shrinking to fit more comfortable spaces lately, it might be worth pausing to ask what you're actually holding. Not with guilt, but with honesty. The lightning doesn't sneak up on anyone.
What was Jesus correcting about how people were thinking about his return, and why do you think people were so drawn to the idea of a hidden, secret messiah?
Are there areas of your own spiritual life where you've accepted a quieter, smaller version of faith than the one Jesus describes — something manageable rather than transformative?
Why do you think human beings are so drawn to hidden or secret spiritual knowledge? What does that impulse reveal about us?
How does confidence in the unmistakable nature of Christ's return affect the way you treat the people around you today — your family, coworkers, strangers?
Is there one counterfeit comfort or false hope you've been leaning on that this verse challenges you to honestly examine this week?
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
