And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
King James Version

Meaning

Jesus spoke these words on the Mount of Olives, just days before His crucifixion, answering His disciples' questions about the end of the age. 'Son of Man' was Jesus' most frequent way of referring to Himself — drawing from a vision in Daniel 7, where a heavenly figure rides on the clouds and receives all authority from God. In Jewish understanding, coming on clouds was a sign of divine presence and judgment. The mourning of the nations isn't just sadness — it includes recognition: seeing clearly who this person is and what it means for how they lived. This return is described as public, visible, and impossible to miss or misinterpret — the opposite of hidden or ambiguous. It is the climax of a long speech Jesus gave about the end of the age.

Prayer

Jesus, the thought of Your return is both glorious and sobering, and I don't always know what to do with that tension. Stir something in me that makes me want to live faithfully right now — not from fear of what's coming, but from love for You. Come, Lord. Amen.

Reflection

Every once in a while, something happens that stops every conversation in every room at the same moment. Not a notification — something you cannot look away from. Jesus had just walked out of the Jerusalem temple and told His disciples it would be rubble. Now they're sitting on the hillside overlooking the city, and they ask what every person asks when the world feels like it's coming apart: what's the sign? Jesus gives a lot of unsettling answers, but this verse is the pivot. Not a small sign — the sky itself. Not one nation witnessing it — all of them. Whatever else you do with eschatology and end-times theology, this much seems clear: when Jesus returns, no one will need a theologian to explain what is happening. There will be no room for 'I wasn't sure.' The mourning is the part worth sitting with longest. The nations don't mourn because they're surprised there's a God. They mourn because they recognize who this is — and what they did with the time they had. The question this verse quietly asks is: when that moment comes, what will you feel? Not as a threat, but as an honest invitation to look at your life right now, before the clouds roll in.
