Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
This verse comes from one of the most troubling passages in the Old Testament. It follows a battle between Israel and the Midianites — a neighboring people group. Earlier in Numbers 25, Midianite women had been involved in luring Israelite men into sexual immorality and idol worship, which triggered a devastating plague that killed thousands. When the Israelite army returns from battle with captives, Moses is furious that the women — those he held responsible for the apostasy — were kept alive. He commands the execution of male children and women who had been sexually active. This is brutal by any standard, ancient or modern. The text reflects the extreme violence of ancient Near Eastern warfare, but naming that context does not dissolve the moral weight of what is commanded here.
God, I bring this passage to you honestly — with confusion and discomfort I am not going to pretend away. I trust that you are good even when your word is hard. Give me the courage to wrestle and the patience to keep seeking. I don't need all the answers today. Amen.
Some verses don't offer a comfortable place to land. There's no clean way to read a command to kill children — no interpretive move that makes it painless. If your first response is discomfort or even outrage, that instinct deserves respect, not suppression. The God revealed in Jesus wept over cities, protected children, told his followers to love their enemies, and stopped a mob execution with a single sentence. That God and this passage exist in the same Bible. That tension is real, and it requires honesty rather than a tidy resolution. Wrestling with hard passages is part of what mature faith looks like — not pretending the text says something it doesn't, and not discarding the Bible the moment it becomes uncomfortable. Many thoughtful believers have held the view that God was working in and through a brutal ancient world, with brutal people, moving history toward something — toward Jesus, who embodied a radically different ethic. That may not fully resolve the tension for you. It doesn't have to today. Ask your hard questions out loud. The faith worth holding is the one that has survived your darkest questions, not the one that never had to ask them.
