This verse comes from a remarkable passage in Proverbs where Wisdom is personified — given a voice and a personality — and speaks in the first person. She describes herself as being present alongside God at the very moment of creation, before the sky was set in place and before the boundaries of the deep ocean were drawn. It's poetic, but the point is serious: wisdom isn't a human invention or a skill we developed over time. It was there before us, woven into the structure of reality itself. To pursue wisdom, then, is to align yourself with something older and deeper than the world you can see.
God, before the world began, wisdom was with you. I need that wisdom today — for decisions I'm dreading, for conversations I don't know how to have, for uncertainties I can't resolve on my own. Teach me to search for what you've already placed within reach. Amen.
Before the first star burned. Before the first wave broke against any shore. Before there was anything to name or measure or map — Wisdom was already there, watching it all come into being. That image should stop you cold. We tend to think of wisdom as something earned slowly and painfully through enough mistakes and enough years. But this verse suggests something different: wisdom isn't so much accumulated as it is *found* — because it's been here the whole time, threaded through the fabric of things. When you're lost in a decision that keeps you up at 2 AM, you're not chasing something abstract or impossibly distant. The wisdom you need was present at the founding of the world. It isn't hiding from you. Proverbs repeatedly invites you to pursue it like buried treasure, to ask for it like you'd ask a trusted friend for directions when you're completely turned around. James 1:5 echoes the same promise: ask, and God gives wisdom generously. The question isn't whether it exists. It's whether you're actually looking.
