How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
This psalm was written by David, the shepherd-turned-king of ancient Israel, a poet and warrior who wrote with rare honesty about both the greatness of God and the darkness of the human heart. The phrase "unfailing love" translates the Hebrew word hesed — a rich, layered word meaning loyal, steadfast, covenant love that does not leave when things get hard or when you stop deserving it. The image of sheltering "in the shadow of your wings" is tender and protective, like a mother bird spreading her wings over her chicks in a storm. What makes this verse striking is its radical inclusivity: David says that both "high and low" — the powerful and the forgotten, the celebrated and the invisible — find the same refuge in God's love. No one is too important for it, and no one is too far beneath notice.
God, I forget too easily that Your love for me is not something I have to earn or keep earning. Thank You that Your wings spread wide enough for me — for who I actually am, not who I present. Teach me to stop performing and simply rest there. Amen.
"How priceless" — David reaches for the language of treasure, of something worth more than he can calculate. And the thing that stops him in his tracks is not a miracle he witnessed or a battle he won. It is the love itself. The word "unfailing" is doing enormous work in this short verse: it names a love that holds even when you have run out of reasons for it to stay, that does not require your best self before it shows up. That kind of love is almost foreign to us. Most of the love we experience — even the good kind — has some unspoken conditions woven quietly into it. Notice who gets to shelter there: the high and the low, the person everyone recognizes and the person no one notices. God's love does not require a platform or a track record. The wing spreads equally over the influential and the invisible. Where are you right now — holding it together or falling apart, proud of yourself or ashamed, seen or unseen? The shelter does not shift based on your answer. You are priceless to God on your best days and on the ones you would quietly erase from the record if you could. You do not have to earn your way into that shadow. You are already there.
