This verse is from Psalm 63, written by David — a king of ancient Israel — while physically hiding in a desert wilderness from people who wanted to kill him. "Your love" here translates the Hebrew word "hesed," one of the richest and most important words in the entire Bible. Hesed means steadfast love, covenant love — the kind that doesn't waver based on circumstances or deserve-ability. It's loyal love that holds on. The declaration that this love is "better than life" would have startled ancient readers, since life was considered the most precious thing a human being could possess. To say God's love surpasses even that is not a casual sentiment — it's an extraordinary, almost scandalous claim.
God, I want to believe — really believe, not just recite — that Your love is better than anything life can offer or take away. Help me feel the weight of hesed, Your faithful and stubborn love, especially on the days when life itself feels like the only thing I'm holding onto. You are more. Amen.
"Better than life." Let that land for a second without rushing past it. Not better than a hard day. Not better than a difficult stretch of months. Better than life itself — the whole thing, all of it. David wrote these words in a desert, possibly hours away from being caught and killed, which makes the statement something other than optimistic spiritual clichés. He's not writing from a comfortable chair with a full stomach. He's writing from the worst place he's ever been, and his conclusion is: even here, even now, even if this ends badly — Your love is worth more than any of it. That's not a sentiment. That's a verdict. We live in a world that treats survival as the highest value — and understandably so. But David is pressing on something deeper: there are things worth more than simply continuing to exist. There is a quality of love so real, so loyal, so lavishly given without condition, that it makes mere survival feel small by comparison. When have you caught even a glimpse of that?
