This verse comes from the book of Revelation, written by the apostle John while he was exiled on a small island called Patmos. John had a vision of the risen Jesus Christ — not the humble teacher from Nazareth, but Christ in his full, eternal, glorified form. The white hair and head draw on imagery from the book of Daniel, where God appears as the "Ancient of Days," symbolizing infinite wisdom, purity, and timeless authority. Eyes like blazing fire suggest someone who sees everything with penetrating, unfiltered clarity — a gaze nothing can hide from. This is a portrait of Christ as he truly is beyond the limitations of human flesh, overwhelming and awe-inspiring.
Lord, the Jesus I imagine is often small enough to be comfortable. Expand my vision of who you actually are — ancient, holy, blazing with life. Let me be undone by your fullness rather than reassured by my own limited, tamed version of you. Amen.
We have a habit of keeping Jesus manageable. We imagine him gentle, patient, easy to approach — and he is all of those things. But John, the very disciple described as "the one Jesus loved," the man who leaned against Jesus at the last supper, fell at his feet like a dead man when he saw this vision. Even deep intimacy with Jesus doesn't make his full glory something you can simply absorb and move on from. This image was not written to comfort us with softness. It was written to shatter our small, domesticated version of who he is. Those blazing eyes have seen everything — your 3 AM shame spirals, the careful half-truths, the version of yourself you present versus the one that exists in private. Nothing is missed. And yet the same chapter records his voice as "the sound of rushing waters," and his first words to the terrified John: "Do not be afraid." That combination — total, unblinking knowledge of who you are, and still a hand reaching down to help you up — is not comfortable in a soft way. It is stabilizing in a way nothing else in the world can match. Sit with that today.
