Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.
This verse is part of a letter dictated by Jesus to the apostle John, addressed to a Christian community in Sardis — a wealthy and historically famous city in what is now western Turkey. The church there had an impressive reputation for being spiritually alive, but Jesus delivers a startling diagnosis: they were actually dying on the inside. The phrase "strengthen what remains" tells us they haven't completely lost everything — there are still embers — but they are fading. "Deeds complete in the sight of my God" suggests that God cares not just about starting well but about follow-through — about integrity that goes all the way to the end, not just the surface.
God, I don't want a faith that only looks alive from the outside. Wake me up to the places where I've grown dull or distant without even noticing. Strengthen what remains in me, and let my deeds be real — not just started, but seen through. Amen.
Reputation is a strange comfort. The church in Sardis had one — and it was good. People said they were alive and thriving. They probably believed it themselves. But Jesus, whose vision cuts through appearances, saw something else: a community coasting on yesterday's fire, faith technically present but practically hollow. The terrifying thing isn't that they had become rebellious or immoral. They were just... asleep. Comfortable. Going through the motions on fumes, mistaking familiarity for vitality. It's worth asking yourself honestly: are there areas of your faith that are alive in name only? A prayer life that has become a formality you rush through before sleep. A habit of serving that lost its heart somewhere along the way. A belief you hold without it costing you anything anymore. "Wake up" isn't a condemnation — it sounds more like someone shaking your shoulder at 3 AM because something important is happening and you're missing it. The fact that something "remains" means it is not too late. Whatever hasn't gone dark yet — feed it. Show up for it like it matters, because it does.
Jesus says their deeds were not "complete" in the sight of God. What do you think makes a deed complete versus incomplete — is it about effort, intention, follow-through, or something else?
Is there an area of your faith that once felt alive and meaningful but has quietly gone through the motions — something you would honestly describe as more habit than heart?
Why do you think it is possible for an entire community of believers to appear spiritually healthy while actually declining inside? What makes this kind of drift so hard to notice?
How do the people around you — your church, your close friends, your small group — help you stay awake spiritually, or make it easier to drift?
What is one specific thing you could do this week to "strengthen what remains" — to revive or recommit to something in your faith that has been flickering?
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
