Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Jesus is speaking to a church (Laodicea) that's become lukewarm — neither hot nor cold. In their wealthy city, they've grown self-sufficient and pushed Jesus to the margins. This isn't about salvation but about daily relationship. The meal invitation was the most intimate gesture in ancient culture — sharing table meant sharing life.
Jesus, I'm sorry for the times I've kept You waiting on the porch. Help me hear Your knock over my noisy life. Thank You for wanting real relationship, not performance. I'm opening the door — please come in and stay. Amen.
Picture this: you're rushing through your house, phone in hand, multitasking like a pro. There's a knock you weren't expecting. Not a delivery driver — Jesus. Not breaking down the door or barging in, just standing there, patient. No agenda except to sit at your actual table and eat actual food with you. The God who spoke stars into being wants to split leftover pizza and hear about your day. He's not asking for a clean house or the good china. Just an open door. The same door we slam shut when life gets messy, when shame creeps in, when we're too busy being impressive to be real. But he's not going anywhere. That knock keeps sounding in the middle of your ordinary chaos, inviting you to stop performing and start eating together. What would it take for you to turn the handle today?
What does it tell us that Jesus knocks instead of barging in?
What keeps you from opening the door to Jesus in your actual daily life?
How does Jesus eating with us change our understanding of holiness?
What parts of your life have you been keeping locked to Jesus?
What's one specific way you can "open the door" to Jesus today, even in a small way?
