And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
King James Version

Meaning

The book of Revelation is a series of apocalyptic visions given to the apostle John while he was exiled on a remote island, written to encourage Christians facing brutal persecution. In chapter 6, a figure called the Lamb — representing Jesus — opens seven sealed scrolls, each revealing a new vision of history and judgment. When the fifth seal is opened, John sees the souls of people who had been killed because of their faith, gathered beneath a heavenly altar, crying out to God: how long before you bring justice? They are each given a white robe — an ancient symbol of righteousness, honor, and divine vindication — and then told something difficult: wait a little longer, because more of their fellow believers will still be killed before the end comes. This is one of the Bible's most honest and haunting verses about suffering, divine timing, and unanswered cries for justice.

Prayer

God, you see every name, every life given in faith, and you have not forgotten a single one. Teach me to trust your timing even when I cannot understand it, and give me the kind of faith that holds on even in the long silence. Amen.

Reflection

"Wait a little longer." Of all the things God could say to people who died for their faith — people who lost everything — this is the answer. Not yet. No neat explanation is wrapped around it, no immediate resolution offered. Just white robes, which is to say: I see you, your life mattered, you are not forgotten. And then the hardest instruction in all of Scripture: hold on. We want theology that makes waiting make sense. We want to know the why and the when. But this verse does not offer that. What it offers instead is something smaller and stranger — a robe and a promise that the story is not over. If you are somewhere right now where God feels absent, where justice feels impossibly far away, where you have asked "how long?" at 3 AM and heard only silence — you are in the company of these souls. The answer they received was not an explanation. It was presence, and a certainty about an outcome that had not arrived yet. That might be all you get today too. It turns out to be more than nothing.

Discussion Questions

1

What does it tell you about God's character that the martyrs' raw cry of "how long?" is recorded in Scripture — and that God responds to it directly rather than ignoring it?

2

Have you ever been in a long season of waiting for God to act, where nothing seemed to change? What did that do to your faith — did it weaken it, deepen it, or complicate it?

3

This verse implies God is working within a timeline we cannot fully see or understand. Does that comfort you, frustrate you, or both — and what does your honest reaction reveal about your trust in him?

4

Knowing that God sees and honors those who suffer for their faith around the world right now, how does that change — or challenge — how you engage with persecuted Christians today?

5

What is one concrete thing you could do this week — a prayer, a donation, a letter — to move your response to persecuted believers from abstract sympathy to actual action?
