And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.
King James Version

Meaning

Zechariah was a prophet writing to the people of Israel around 520 BC, after a devastating period of exile in Babylon. This verse describes what God will do with a surviving remnant — a "third" who make it through catastrophic trials. The image of refining silver and testing gold refers to the ancient process of applying intense heat to metal to burn away impurities and reveal what is pure. God promises that through this suffering, His people will emerge genuinely His own — crying out to Him and hearing His answer. The verse closes with one of the most intimate declarations in Scripture: a mutual belonging between God and His people.

Prayer

God, I confess I want the refining without the fire. Help me trust that what You're burning away is exactly what stands between us. When the heat is high, remind me that You are watching — and that You will answer when I call. Amen.

Reflection

There's something a silversmith knows that most of us resist: you can't rush the fire. The heat has to reach a precise temperature — hot enough to bring impurities to the surface, held there long enough to skim them away. Ancient silversmiths would watch the molten metal until they could see their own reflection in it. That was how they knew it was done. God uses this same image for what He's doing in you during the hard stretches — the diagnosis that won't resolve, the relationship that keeps fracturing, the dream that keeps getting delayed. The fire isn't punishment; it's preparation. But here's what the verse won't let you miss: the outcome isn't just a purified person — it's a restored relationship. "They will call on my name and I will answer them." The suffering produces something the comfort never could: a voice that actually cries out, and a quiet certainty that someone is actually listening.
