And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
King David was the most celebrated king in Israel's history, and he had a lifelong dream: to build a permanent, glorious temple for God in Jerusalem. But God told him the task would go to his son Solomon instead — partly because David had been a warrior who had shed much blood. So in his final years, David didn't build the temple himself; he gathered the materials, drew up the architectural plans, organized the priests and craftsmen, and prepared Solomon for the work he wouldn't live to see completed. This verse captures his last charge to his son before he died: don't be afraid of the enormity of this task, because God himself will be with you all the way through it.
Father, thank you for the work you've placed in my hands — and for the grace to release what isn't mine to finish. When the task feels too large and the timeline feels too short, remind me that you are already in it, that you will not fail, and that you are the one who completes what he starts. Amen.
David wanted to build the temple more than almost anything. He gathered cedar and gold and stone for years. He drew up the plans. He organized thousands of workers. And then he handed it all to someone else and never saw the finished building. That is not a small thing — to pour yourself completely into a vision you don't get to complete, and to do it without bitterness, without sabotage, without quietly making sure Solomon knows how much he owes you. Instead, David stood up and said, clearly, *be strong and courageous, and do the work.* He became the kind of person who pours everything he has into someone else's finish line. Maybe you're carrying something you won't get to finish — a dream you'll have to hand off, a child you can't protect forever, a work that will outlive your involvement. David's words carry the weight of someone who knows exactly what that costs. And what he offers isn't resignation. It's a real promise with a real name behind it: *God will not fail you or forsake you.* Not "it'll probably work out." Not "you've got this." God himself is present in the unfinished work. You can let go. The one who started this knows how it ends.
Why was David not allowed to build the temple himself, and how does knowing that backstory change how you hear the words he speaks to Solomon?
Have you ever had to hand off something you had invested deeply in — a project, a role, a relationship — to someone else? What was the hardest part?
Is there a real difference between surrendering a dream and giving up on it? How do you know which one you're actually doing?
David's charge — 'be strong and courageous, and do the work' — was both a command and an act of profound encouragement. Who in your life needs you to say something like that to them right now?
What is one unfinished thing you are currently white-knuckling rather than entrusting to God? What would it look like, practically, to loosen your grip this week?
Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
