And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
Near the end of his life, King David — the famous shepherd-turned-warrior-turned-king of Israel — gathered the leaders of his nation and spoke directly to his son Solomon, who would succeed him. David had dreamed of building a great temple for God, but God told him that Solomon would build it instead. This verse is David's deeply personal charge to his son: know God, serve Him completely, with your whole heart and a willing mind. The warning that follows is sobering — God doesn't just observe actions, He sees every hidden motive behind every thought. The promise is equally striking: seek Him sincerely, and you will find Him. It is a dying father passing on the most important thing he ever learned.
Father, You see every corner of me — including the parts I haven't named out loud or even admitted to myself. I don't want to perform faith for an audience. I want to actually know You. Search my heart, correct what's hidden, and meet me where I really am. I'm still seeking. Amen.
David had lived long enough to know the difference between going through religious motions and actually knowing God. He'd done both. He had worshipped in the wilderness, danced in the streets, written songs that still move people three thousand years later. He had also lied, committed adultery, arranged a murder, and hidden it all behind a throne. And somehow, on the other side of all that wreckage, he was still standing — still talking about God's faithfulness. So when he says to Solomon "acknowledge the God of your father," he's not handing him a rulebook. He's handing him a relationship that had cost everything and still held. The line that should stop you is this: "the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts." Not just your thoughts — the motives underneath them. That level of being known is either terrifying or incredibly freeing, depending on what you do with it. You can exhaust yourself performing the right things for the wrong reasons, or you can simply come to God as you actually are and let Him work with what's real. Solomon would go on to build the temple — and later, heartbreakingly, to walk away. The invitation David hands him here is the same one handed to you right now: seek, and you will find. The door is still open.
David tells Solomon to serve God with 'wholehearted devotion and a willing mind.' What's the difference between those two qualities — and why do you think both matter?
What does it feel like to genuinely sit with the idea that God knows not just your actions, but the hidden motives underneath your thoughts? Does that feel like a threat, a relief, or something more complicated?
David passed his faith — imperfect, hard-won, and scarred — to his son. Who passed faith on to you, and what did their failures and struggles teach you about God that their successes never could?
The verse says forsaking God leads to rejection, but seeking Him leads to being found. How do you hold those two truths when someone you love has walked away from faith?
Where in your life right now are you serving God out of duty rather than genuine willingness? What would it look like to bring your honest, reluctant heart to God about that — not next week, but today?

If you seek Him [inquiring for and of Him and requiring Him as your first and vital necessity] He will let you find Him; but if you abandon (turn away from) Him, He will reject you forever.
