And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
King James Version

Meaning

This verse comes from a moment where Peter — one of Jesus's closest disciples and a key leader in the early church — is defending himself to other Jewish believers who were upset he had visited a non-Jewish Roman soldier named Cornelius. In the ancient world, Jewish people and Gentiles (non-Jews) did not mix socially or religiously; crossing that line was scandalous and culturally forbidden. Peter had received a vision from God telling him those old divisions were finished, and when he went to Cornelius's household and began speaking about Jesus, the Holy Spirit fell on the people there before Peter even finished his message. Here, Peter is recounting that experience to skeptical colleagues, making a pointed comparison: what happened to Cornelius's household looked exactly like what happened at Pentecost. God acted before anyone gave permission.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the boxes I put you in and the people I've quietly decided aren't yours. Surprise me. Show up where I'm not expecting it, in people I've overlooked. Give me Peter's honesty — to recognize you at work even when you break every category I had prepared. Amen.

Reflection

Peter never finished his sermon. The Spirit showed up before the conclusion, before the altar call, before anything was formally wrapped up. He opened his mouth, started speaking, and God moved. There's something almost funny about it — and something deeply important. The Holy Spirit apparently wasn't waiting for Peter to reach his main point. God doesn't operate on human timelines or stay inside anyone's categories of who's ready, who's in, who's spiritually qualified. Most of us carry a quiet mental map of where God is supposed to show up and who God is supposed to touch. We hold it carefully: the right background, the right denomination, the right moral track record. And then something happens — a conversation, a person, a moment we didn't plan — and the Spirit shows up there, in that, in them. It was disorienting for Peter too. But he didn't fight it. He asked: "Who was I to stand in God's way?" Is there someone in your life you've quietly decided isn't God's type? What if the Spirit is already moving in them?

Discussion Questions

Why was it so controversial for Peter to visit Cornelius's household, and what made the Spirit's arrival there so significant for the early church's understanding of who God's good news was actually for?

2

Can you think of a time when God showed up in a place or a person you wouldn't have chosen or expected — maybe even someone you had already written off?

3

What unspoken rules do you carry about who counts as someone God would move in or through — and if you're honest, where did those rules come from?

4

How does Peter's experience challenge you in the way you relate to people who don't share your religious background, your lifestyle, or your moral history?

5

Who in your life have you quietly dismissed spiritually? What would it look like this week to genuinely open yourself to the possibility that God is already at work in them?
