And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
The speaker here is John the Baptist — a prophet who appeared in the wilderness announcing that a long-awaited deliverer, the Messiah, was coming. God had given John a specific mission: baptize people with water as an outward sign of repentance, and watch for a particular sign. God told him in advance that the Messiah would be identified by the Holy Spirit visibly descending and remaining on him. John is explaining that without this divine sign, he wouldn't have recognized Jesus on his own. When Jesus came to be baptized, the Spirit came down like a dove and stayed — and John understood. This verse is John's honest admission: I was shown. I didn't figure it out.
God, I confess I trust my own eyes more than I'd like to admit. Give me the humility of John — to acknowledge I need you to reveal what I cannot see on my own. Open my perception to where your Spirit is already present and moving. Amen.
John the Baptist had one job: identify the Messiah when he arrived. And yet — remarkably — he admits he wouldn't have known on his own. Here is a man who had been preaching in the desert, drawing massive crowds, baptizing hundreds of people, and he still needed God to point out the person standing right in front of him. The sign wasn't Jesus's impressive credentials or his charisma. It was the Spirit descending and remaining — not visiting briefly, but staying put. We spend enormous energy trying to discern where God is at work through our own perception: gut feelings, logic, the advice of the smartest people we know. John's confession quietly dismantles that confidence. He was completely dependent on divine revelation to see what was happening inches away from him. Where are you trying to evaluate your calling, your relationships, your next chapter — purely by what you can observe? The Spirit who revealed Jesus to John hasn't gone anywhere. Maybe the move is less about figuring it out and more about honestly asking to be shown.
Why do you think God used a visible, external sign — the Spirit descending — rather than simply telling John directly who Jesus was?
John admits he would not have known without divine revelation. How comfortable are you with admitting that your own spiritual perception has real limits?
What does it mean that the Spirit came down and remained on Jesus — why do you think the staying matters, not just the arriving?
How does John's dependence on God to show him the truth challenge the way you make judgments about the people in your life?
Is there a situation you're facing right now where you need to stop trying to figure it out and instead genuinely ask God to show you what you're missing?
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
