Ephesians 1:4

Paul opens his letter to the Ephesians with what reads like a poem of astonishment — a long, almost breathless sentence listing everything God has done. This verse makes a staggering claim: before the world was created — before stars, before time, before you were born — God looked ahead and chose you. The phrase 'in him' means this choosing happened in and through Jesus. The purpose was not merely to pardon you; it was to make you 'holy and blameless' — genuinely good and set apart in God's sight, not just legally cleared. The words 'in love' reveal the motive behind all of it: this was not a cold divine transaction. It began with love, before anything else existed.

God, it's hard to believe I was wanted before I even existed — before my doubts, before my failures, before every way I've disappointed you and myself. And yet here it is: chosen in love before the world began. Teach me to live from that security instead of spending my life searching for it. Amen.

Before the first photon of light tore through the dark, before the first cell divided or the first heartbeat sounded, there was a thought. And you were in it. You don't have to prove anything. You were chosen first. The invitation is to live *from* that — not toward it.
