I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
King James Version

Meaning

Paul is writing to Christians who've been told they must follow Jewish law to be saved. He says his old identity — his achievements, failures, and self-effort — died with Christ on the cross. Now Christ doesn't just live nearby; Christ actually lives within him, directing his choices. This isn't spiritual possession but intimate union — like a branch that's no longer just near the vine but actually drawing life from it.

Prayer

Christ who lives in me, evict everything I keep trying to drag back from the cross. Teach me this mystery — that your life in me is stronger than my death in me. Help me stop performing and start hosting your love in my body today. Amen.

Reflection

The first time you realized your ex still had your Netflix password and was binge-watching from your account, you understood how someone can be present without being welcome. That's the opposite of what Paul's describing. Christ isn't just using your identity — he's given you his. Your worst day and your best performance both got crucified with Jesus, and what rose is something entirely new. This means the pressure's off and the pressure's on. Off, because you can't earn what was freely given when Jesus loved you enough to die for you. On, because now you're not faking goodness — you're hosting the source of all goodness. When you snap at your kids or scroll mindlessly, you're not just failing your resolutions. You're grieving the Christ who chose to make his home in you. But even that grief is him, alive in you, teaching you how to be truly alive.
