Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
The book of Hebrews was written to early Jewish Christians steeped in the Hebrew scriptures and the Temple's system of worship. The author makes the case that Jesus is greater than angels, prophets, and the old covenant. This verse describes Jesus as "the radiance of God's glory" — not a reflection of God, but the very light pouring out from God's core, the way the sun radiates rather than mirrors light. "Exact representation of his being" uses the image of a seal pressed into wax: Jesus is the perfect imprint of God himself. "Sustaining all things by his powerful word" means the universe holds together because of Jesus — he is not merely a teacher or moral example but the one keeping existence itself going. After dying for human sin ("providing purification for sins"), he sat down — a posture of completion and supreme authority — at God's right hand, the place of highest honor in the ancient world.
Lord, I confess I often shrink you down to something I can manage — a teacher, a helper, a moral guide. Open my eyes to the full, staggering weight of who Jesus really is. Let me rest in the reality that the work is done, the seat is taken, and I am fully and permanently purified. Amen.
Most people picture Jesus as a kind man in robes, walking dusty roads and telling stories. And he was that. But this verse cracks open a much larger reality. The Greek word translated "radiance" here is apaugasma — it describes a glow that doesn't bounce off a surface but pours out from the source itself. The sun doesn't reflect light; it is light. That's the claim being made about Jesus. When you look at him — his compassion, his fury at injustice, his willingness to touch the untouchable — you're not seeing a representative or a symbol. You're seeing what God actually looks like. That reframes everything. Then there's that small, weighty word: "sat down." In the Temple, priests stood all day because their work was never finished — sacrifice upon sacrifice, year after year. Jesus sat. His work was done. Whatever guilt you revisit at 3 AM, whatever shame clings to the edges of your prayers — he sat down for that. The purification he provided wasn't partial or provisional. It was enough. Maybe the most radical thing this verse asks of you isn't to try harder or believe more strenuously. It's simply to stop living as though the seat is still empty.
What does it mean that Jesus is the "exact representation" of God's being — and how does that change the way you read the Gospels and understand what God is actually like?
Is there an area of your life where you act as though Jesus' work isn't quite finished — where you still feel like you need to earn or re-earn something from God?
If Jesus is "sustaining all things by his powerful word," what does that mean for the parts of your life that feel most chaotic or completely out of your control right now?
How does understanding Jesus as the full and accurate picture of God change the way you talk about God with people who are skeptical or who have been hurt by religion?
What is one specific way you could live this week as though the purification this verse describes is actually, completely, and finally true for you?
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
