And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
King James Version

Meaning

John is telling us that the eternal God chose to become human and live among us. The "Word" refers to Jesus, who existed with God from the beginning. Instead of staying distant, God moved into our neighborhood, pitching his tent in the mess of human life. People actually saw this God-in-human-form, full of both unearned kindness and complete honesty.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for moving into our mess instead of keeping your distance. Help me stop trying to sanitize my life before letting you in. Show me where you're already dwelling in the places I'd rather hide. Teach me to live in the freedom of your grace and the clarity of your truth. Amen.

Reflection

Picture the God who spoke galaxies into existence learning to take his first steps as a toddler, scraping his knees on the same ground we walk. The hands that flung stars into space learned to hold a carpenter's tools and later felt the splinters of the cross. This isn't a distant deity peering down from heaven — this is God choosing our cramped apartments, our hospital rooms, our family dinners. You don't have to clean up your life before inviting Jesus in. He already chose to enter the chaos, to live in the middle of your unfiltered reality. The same glory that Moses glimpsed from a distance now wants to make a home in your Tuesday afternoon errands and your 2 AM anxiety spirals. He's not shocked by your contradictions — he's full of grace for them. But he's also full of truth, which means he's not content to leave you stuck in patterns that destroy you.
