John 1:32

John the Baptist was a prophet who came before Jesus to prepare people for his arrival. This verse records John's personal testimony about what he witnessed at Jesus's baptism in the Jordan River. At that moment, John saw the Holy Spirit — understood by Christians as the third person of the Trinity, the divine presence of God — descend visibly from heaven in the form of a dove and come to rest on Jesus. The dove was a symbol of peace in Jewish culture, and this event publicly confirmed for John that Jesus was the one he had been pointing people toward. The word 'remain' is significant: the Spirit didn't briefly appear and disappear — it settled and stayed.

Father, thank you for a Spirit that doesn't just visit — it stays. I don't always feel your presence, but teach me to trust that it is there, settled and sure, not dependent on my performance or my mood. Let that steadiness shape how I live today. Amen.

Of all the symbols God could have chosen — an eagle, a pillar of fire, a crack of thunder — the Spirit came as a dove. Doves don't startle you. They are gentle, unhurried birds. In Jewish history, a dove carrying an olive branch marked the end of God's judgment on the earth and the beginning of something completely new. And when John watched the Spirit descend, he used one particular word that deserves more attention than it usually gets: remain. Not a flash. Not a passing moment of inspiration. It settled. Consider what tends to remain on you — the anxiety that follows you to sleep, the grief that resurfaces in unexpected places, the shame you can't quite set down. The Spirit that descended on Jesus wasn't a reward for his ministry; it arrived before the miracles, before the crowds, at the very beginning. That same Spirit is available to you — not as a spiritual high you have to maintain, but as a presence that settles and stays. You don't have to perform to keep it. You just have to receive it.
