There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
The Gospel of John opens with sweeping cosmic language about 'the Word' — a divine, eternal being later revealed to be Jesus. Right in the middle of that grand introduction, the writer pauses to mention a very specific, very human man: John the Baptist. This John was a prophet in ancient Israel whose entire purpose was to prepare people for the arrival of Jesus — to announce that someone extraordinary was coming. The phrase 'sent from God' is everything here — it means his life wasn't an accident or a career choice, but a divine assignment. The verse doesn't describe what he looked like or what he achieved; it defines him entirely by his relationship to God and his mission.
Lord, remind me that I don't need a grand stage to live a sent life. Help me show up today with purpose — in the small conversations, the ordinary moments, the places I'd rather skip. Let my life point to something greater than myself. Amen.
There's something almost jarring about this verse. The Gospel of John starts in the heavens — 'In the beginning was the Word' — language so vast it makes your head swim. Then, without fanfare, we get this: a man, a name, a purpose. Not a king. Not a philosopher. Just someone sent. The writer doesn't tell us what John looked like, how his voice sounded echoing off the Jordan River, or what his childhood was like. His entire identity in this verse is a relationship and a mission. That's it. Most of us spend enormous energy figuring out who we are — personality tests, career paths, the opinions of people whose approval we can't stop chasing. But what if the deepest thing about you isn't what you've built or how you're perceived, but that you were *sent*? Not to be famous or even remembered — just to show up faithfully in the particular corner of the world you've been placed in. Your ordinary Tuesday, the conversation at work, the neighbor you've been meaning to check on — that might be exactly the kind of sending this verse is talking about. You don't have to be a prophet to live a sent life.
John is defined in this verse entirely by being 'sent from God,' with no description of his personality or accomplishments — what does that suggest about where true identity actually comes from?
When have you experienced a moment that felt less like coincidence and more like you were placed somewhere or in someone's path for a reason you couldn't fully explain?
Is it possible to live with a sense of divine purpose without becoming self-important about it? What's the difference between confidence in your calling and arrogance?
How might seeing the people around you as also 'sent' — with their own purpose from God — change how you treat them, especially the difficult ones?
What is one specific relationship or situation in your life right now where you could show up more intentionally as someone with a mission, even a small one?
