He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Jesus is speaking to his closest followers the night before his crucifixion, describing what the Holy Spirit will do after he is gone. He uses the word 'He' deliberately — the Spirit is a person, not just a force or a feeling. The Spirit's defining purpose, Jesus says, is not to promote himself but to bring glory to Jesus by taking what belongs to Jesus and revealing it to believers. This is part of Jesus's explanation of how the Father, Son, and Spirit work together — each with a distinct role. The Spirit's role is essentially to make Jesus more visible, not himself.
Jesus, thank you for not leaving us alone — for sending your Spirit to keep making you real to us. I don't want to miss what he's showing me. Tune my heart to notice him today, and let what he reveals about you actually take root. Amen.
In a world that rewards self-promotion — where the currency is visibility, credit, and personal brand — the Holy Spirit does something almost countercultural. He takes what belongs to Jesus and hands it to you, quietly, without putting his name on it. Every time. No personal agenda. No spotlight. Just redirection toward Christ. This matters more practically than it might sound. That moment when a verse lands differently than it ever has, when prayer breaks something loose at 3 AM, when conviction arrives that you didn't expect and didn't manufacture — that's not ambient spiritual energy. That's the Spirit picking something up from Jesus and placing it directly in front of you. He's been doing it your whole life. The invitation is simply to start noticing, and to let what he reveals about Jesus actually change something.
Why do you think Jesus specifically says the Spirit will bring glory to him rather than to the Father, or to himself — what might he be guarding against in how his followers understand the Spirit?
Can you think of a time when you felt the Holy Spirit drawing your attention to something about Jesus in a new way? What happened as a result?
If the Spirit's purpose is to make Christ known, what does it look like when Christian communities focus more on spiritual experiences than on Jesus himself?
How does understanding the Spirit as a person — with a purpose and a will — rather than a feeling change how you relate to him in everyday life?
What is one practical way you could become more attentive to what the Spirit might be trying to reveal to you this week?
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
