All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Jesus is making a stunning claim of unity with God the Father — that everything belonging to the Father belongs to him as well. This verse is part of a private conversation Jesus had with his twelve closest followers the night before his arrest and crucifixion. He was preparing them for his departure by explaining the role of the Holy Spirit, who would come after him. The Spirit's mission, Jesus says, is to take what is his — his truth, his wisdom, his character — and deliver it personally to his followers. You are not an afterthought in this arrangement; you are the intended recipient.
Father, thank you that you hold nothing back — that everything you have, you've given to your Son, and your Spirit brings it to me. Help me stop living like a spiritual orphan when you've made me an heir. Open my eyes today to what the Spirit is trying to show me about Jesus. Amen.
Think about the last time you tried to explain something that really mattered to someone you loved — and you knew you were running out of time. That's the weight in this room. Jesus is hours from the cross, his friends are confused and scared, and instead of talking about what's coming for him, he's talking about what's coming for them. The chain in this verse is worth sitting with: the Father gives everything to the Son, the Son gives to the Spirit, and the Spirit brings it directly to you. You're not receiving a secondhand religion or a watered-down copy of something that used to be real. The Spirit doesn't bring you a pamphlet about Jesus — he brings you the actual inheritance. The question is whether you're living like someone who has received it.
What does Jesus claiming that everything belonging to the Father is also his tell us about who he understood himself to be — and why does that matter?
When have you experienced the Holy Spirit making something about Jesus feel suddenly real or personal to you? What was that like?
If the Spirit's whole job is to connect us to Jesus, what does it say about our faith if we rarely think about or actively rely on the Spirit?
How might your relationships change if you truly believed that the people around you were also intended recipients of this same spiritual inheritance?
What is one area of your life where you need the Spirit to make something of Christ's 'known' to you right now — and what would it look like to actually ask for that?
