Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
Nicodemus was a Pharisee — a member of the most respected religious group in Jewish society — and a ruler on the Sanhedrin, the Jewish governing council. He had come to Jesus at night, perhaps to avoid being seen, and Jesus had been explaining that a person must be spiritually "born again" to enter God's kingdom. Nicodemus struggled to understand this. Jesus's question here carries both surprise and a gentle sting: Nicodemus was a professional teacher of God's law, yet the deeper spiritual realities it pointed to were escaping him entirely. It's a moment that exposes the gap between religious expertise and genuine spiritual understanding.
Lord, keep me from the pride of thinking I have you figured out. Nicodemus knew so much and understood so little — I don't want that to be my story. Open my eyes to see you freshly, beyond what I already think I know. Amen.
There's something almost painful about expertise that misses the point. Nicodemus had memorized scripture, taught it for years, earned the highest religious credentials his world could offer — and yet he's standing in front of Jesus completely lost. Jesus doesn't mock him, but he does ask the question that must have stung: "You're the teacher, and you don't get this?" It's the kind of question that quietly reframes everything you thought you knew about yourself. Maybe the most dangerous blind spot isn't ignorance — it's the confidence that comes from knowing a lot. You can know every story in the Bible, every theological term, every church tradition, and still miss what God is actually doing right in front of you. What's one area of your faith where familiarity might be blocking fresh understanding? Nicodemus wasn't rejected by Jesus here — he was invited to see more. That same invitation is still open.
What had Nicodemus been teaching his whole career that should have prepared him to understand Jesus? What do you think got in the way?
When has your own religious or spiritual knowledge felt like a barrier rather than a help in actually connecting with God?
Is it possible to be deeply knowledgeable about the Bible and still fundamentally misunderstand what God is after? What does that look like in real life?
How might spiritual pride — the quiet sense that you've figured things out — affect the way you treat people who are newer to faith or who ask questions you find basic?
What is one belief or assumption about God that you are genuinely willing to question this week, and what would it take to sit with that honestly?
