And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
This scene takes place just after Jesus rose from the dead. His disciples — the close group of followers who had traveled with him for three years — were gathered together when Jesus suddenly appeared in the room. They were terrified, assuming they were seeing a ghost. Jesus responded by asking them two questions: why were they troubled, and why were doubts rising in their minds? The questions weren't accusatory — they were an invitation to look inward. These were people who had watched Jesus die and hidden in fear for three days, and grief had a way of making even eyewitness evidence feel impossible to trust.
God, there are doubts I haven't wanted to admit, even to myself. You see the troubled places I've been hiding. I'm bringing them to you now — not with tidy answers, just with honesty. Meet me here. Amen.
"Why do doubts rise in your minds?" It's worth noticing what Jesus didn't say. He didn't say: "Stop doubting." He asked a question. There's a real difference between a command and an invitation to examine what's actually happening inside you. These disciples had walked with Jesus for years, seen miracles up close — and still, when he stood in front of them alive, their first instinct was fear and doubt. Grief and trauma have a way of making us distrust even what our own eyes are seeing. Jesus's question is worth sitting with today — not as an accusation, not a "what's wrong with you," but as a genuine, quiet inquiry: *where is the trouble coming from?* You can bring your spinning thoughts, your restless what-ifs, your 2 AM agitation to him. He already knows they're there. He's asking anyway, because he wants you to name them too. That naming is where something begins to shift.
Why do you think the disciples — people who had witnessed miracles firsthand — still doubted and feared when they saw Jesus standing in the room?
When you feel troubled or anxious, what does that usually look like for you specifically — racing thoughts, withdrawal, irritability, something else?
Is there a difference between doubt that pulls you toward God and doubt that pulls you away from him? What does each kind feel like from the inside?
How might you respond differently to a friend who is troubled or doubting, knowing that Jesus asked questions rather than condemned?
What is one troubling thought or unanswered question you would be willing to name honestly to God today, instead of quietly managing it on your own?
